Arianna Delane, a 4-year-old niece of murdered George Floyd, was shot while sleeping in her bed after a gunman opened fire on her home on New Years, the Houston (Texas) police said yesterday.

The girl received shot in the torso and is in stable condition after emergency surgery, police said. The bullet pierced his lung and liver and also broke three of his ribs, he announced ABC News.

Her family identified her as the niece of Floyd, who died in Minneapolis in 2020 in a case of police abuse that sparked protests, looting and funding cuts to public safety in various parts of the country, including New York.

At the time of the Houston shooting early Saturday morning, four adults and two children were in the apartment. Police said in a statement that it was not known whether one person or more fired the shots.

Until yesterday they had not announced suspects nor was a possible motive for the attack or link to Floyd known. Arianna was asleep in her bed when she was shot. Her family often took her to marches and rallies demanding justice for her late uncle.

Derek Chauvin, then a Minneapolis cop, was sentenced to more than 20 years in prison for murdering Floyd after he held his knee to his neck for more than nine minutes.
