Marcell Ozuna homered and led a six-run rally in the third inning to guide the victory of the Gigantes del Cibao, who won the championship of the Professional Baseball League of the Dominican Republic (LIDOM), by defeating the Eastern Stars 8-3 this Sunday, winning the final 4-1, in the match held at the Tetelo Vargas stadium, in San Pedro de Macorís.
With this victory the Giants won their second championship title, after the one achieved in the 2014-15 championship, under the reins of today’s general manager of the Tigres del Licey, Audo Vicente, just before the Stars, who on that occasion they defeated 5-3, in the series scheduled for the best of nine games.
Ozuna came to the plate in the third inning, with one out and two baserunners, when he hit a pitch from left-hander Andy Otero (0-1), who started for the greens, sending the ball over the left field wall. , to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
Ozuna’s home run was his third in the series and with them he accumulated his eight RBIs in the final, leading both departments.
The Giants continued their attack in the episode and after a deflected pitch by reliever Ramón Santos, which allowed the colts’ fourth run to score, Richard Ureña singled down the middle of the field, which led two more men to the plate, putting the actions 6-0.
Those led by Colombian Luis “Pipe” Urueta they scored again in the fourth chapter, by double RBI of a run by Moisés Sierra and they added another in the seventh, by Hanser Alberto’s single.
The Orientals threatened to open the scoring in the sixth inning, when they loaded the bases after two outs, but José Sirí made a catch by diving headfirst, before a hit by Abraham Almonte, to conclude the entry.
The greens returned to the attack in the seventh chapter, and this time they did manage to score, stepping on the plate three times, by driving singles by Robinson Canó and Domingo Leyba, and by hit for double play, which allowed the third to enter, by Ramon Flores.
Otero, who had been the only All-Star starter to go at least five innings in the final series, was unable to complete three innings, leaving the mound after 2.1 innings, in which four earned runs were scored.
Raúl Valdés (1-0), who started for the Giants, fulfilled his task, covering five scoreless innings, in which he struck out three batters.
Ozuna with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Ureña, with two RBIs, they were the main men on offense for the Giants.
For the greens, Robinson Canó, with a run scored and an RBI, was the most prominent offensive player.
Now the Giants of Cibao will be the representatives of the LIDOM in the Caribbean Series, which starts next Friday at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium in Santo Domingo.
