A jealous Iowa woman who started a fire that killed a 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son in April 2018, was sentenced to two life sentences on Monday.

Denise Susanna O’Brien, 45, was found guilty of two counts of murder in the first degree in November for the deaths of Ashley Smith, 32, and her son, Jaykwon Sallis, 9.

The woman started the fire in the early morning of April 22, 2018 upset that her on-and-off boyfriend had spent the night with another woman at Smith’s Waterloo home, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported.

O’Brien texted: “Karma comin 4 u … I hope it hurts”, the groom before setting the fire, prosecutors said.

Jaykwon’s boyfriend, other woman and older sister were able to escape the fire alive, however Smith and his son died in their room on the second floor for smoke inhalation and burns.

As The Courier points out, in passing sentence the judge pointed to evidence that O’Brien knew very well that there were other people in the house and that he had intentionally set the front and back doors on fire so that no one could get out.

For his part, O’Brien denied having anything to do with the deaths, saying that He was at home when the tragedy occurred, the outlet added.

The Courier also indicated that after the fire, O’Brien would have sent a text message to her boyfriend: “If I’m not unlucky, I’ll have a nun.”

O’Brien was arrested in August 2018.

“You are evil. You killed two beautiful souls for a guy who obviously didn’t love you … You talked about luck and karma. Well, I really hope it catches you. You don’t show any remorse for what you did. You took everything. A piece of my heart is gone forever“Wrote Sheila Craft, Smith’s mother, in a statement read by prosecutors at sentencing.
