Luis Fonsi celebrates five years since the release of “Despacito”

Puerto Rican artist Luis Fonsi celebrated this Thursday, January 13, the fifth anniversary of the release of the song “Despacito”, whose music video became the most viewed in YouTube history because “it managed to cross language barriers.”

“Today marks 5 years since we launched #Despacito, a theme that managed to cross language barriers and that gave me the opportunity to celebrate my culture and my flag in front of the whole world,” Fonsi tweeted.

In the message, the artist includes a photo with the Puerto Rican reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee, who put his urban touch on the famous song that was written by Luis and the Panamanian Erika Ender.

At one point, remained at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 49 consecutive weeks, and ranked first in at least 89 countries.

The video was directed by fellow Puerto Rican Carlos Pérez., by the company Elastic People, was filmed in the colorful landscape of the San Juan neighborhood of La Perla and in the iconic bar La Factoría, on San Sebastián Street in Old San Juan.

“Despacito”, at its highest point, reached 25 million views in a single day on YouTube, where it was the first clip in the history of the platform to exceed 3,000 million, until reaching the 7,701,161,229 views it has today that make it the second most viewed in history, behind the children’s song “Baby Shark”.

The success of the “Despacito” video, however, took a hit when it temporarily disappeared from YouTube in April 2018 due to hackers.

The video stopped being seen on Vevo and in its place a frame from the Spanish television series “La Casa de Papel” appeared, in which its protagonists point weapons at the camera.
